![]() ![]() I consider this to be a disservice to the album as a whole purely because it is a culmination of everything Tyler always aimed to achieve musically but on a level he had not previously reached. In my opinion, the most unfortunate part of this was that much of the discussion surrounding the album was more focused on whether or not Tyler, the Creator was coming out of the closet and less about the actual music. Later on in the album, on the twelfth track ‘November’ Tyler begins by informing the listener of the doubts and concerns he has, such as whether or not he is popular because of the music he makes or the personality he has presented to the world ( “and I’m only known for tweets more than beats”) and whether or not the confessional lyrics on ‘Garden Shed’ will result in his oldest friends turning on him.Īt this point, it is common knowledge that Flower Boy was leaked online ahead of its official release. ![]() On ‘Mr Lonely’, backed by an up tempo instrumental featuring cracking snares and soaring synths, Tyler laments how, despite the fact that he may appear to be happy due to being the loudest in any room he occupies, the reality is, he feels alone and no amount of fancy cars can remedy that. But this time around, Tyler isn’t hiding behind any masks to divulge the things he has been dealing with in his life and the result is his most sincere album thus far. By presenting Bastard and Goblin as therapy sessions and Wolf as a film about a love triangle at a summer camp, Tyler has made it clear that he is often rapping from the perspective of someone else, albeit while burdening the characters with some of his own real world struggles. There’s the murderous Wolf Haley, the anarchic Tron Cat, the drug dealer with some serious issues, Sam or the titular hero of his third album, Wolf. In the past, Tyler has been actively playing various characters. However, there is a key difference between the sides of Tyler that take turns in the spotlight on his new album and the ones that stole the show on his first three full lengths. Songs like ‘She’ and ‘2seater’ are arguably where the two sides of Tyler collide with one another. ‘Flower Boy’ on the other hand is the mastermind behind ear worms like ‘Treehome95’, ‘Analog 2’ and ‘Fucking Young’. ‘Scum Fuck’ is the side of Tyler responsible for anthems like Bastard’s ‘French!’ and ‘Yonkers’ the song made infamous by its music video in 2011. ![]() Marketed as Scum Fuck Flower Boy, this fifth album epitomises the two sides of the musician’s style that can be split in half quite effectively by labelling them ‘Scum Fuck’ and ‘Flower Boy’ respectively. This latest addition to his canon sees Tyler blend the aforementioned highlights of its predecessors to create an album that can stand proudly beside them both as one of his most accomplished works to date. ![]() The 26-year-old rapper had started to make strides in his production on 2013’s Wolf and on his previous album, Cherry Bomb, his ear for beautiful musical and vocal arrangements was at the forefront. On Flower Boy, Tyler has begun to reach his full potential. With the exception of the latter, all of those very real and very relatable themes make it onto Tyler’s fifth studio album, Flower Boy. There is the more obviously macabre depictions of violence, murder and sexual assault present in his earlier works but there are also the recurring themes of love, loneliness, discontent, isolation, boredom and the lack of a father figure that have permeated every single one of his releases prior to his most recent offering. Tyler, the Creator’s music has always dealt with dark themes. ![]()
